DOGS 'LOVE' USING THEIR NOSES.
Dogs see their world mainly by detecting all the various scents around them, much like we use our eyes.
Tap into this powerful and natural ability and have fun enjoying scentwork activities together. Your dog will love you for it!
For fun or for those who get bitten by the Scentwork bug, there are varous organisations who run workshops and Trials. We can advise you further on these.
Here at Woodlands classes, our emphasis is on fun in a friendly and relaxed environment.
5 Sunday mornings per course.

All dogs will be in their own space within the hall for the duration of the lesson. We may ocassionally require dogs to be placed in their cars if we need no dog distractions for nervous or dogs unable to cope well around other dogs while carrying out their scentwork searches and such dogs to wait in their cars before they are able to work, with the owner in the hall learning and observing. We hope that you will understand if this is required.
We use the hall and adjacent outside space and cars for searches.
You and your dog will be learning the basics of scent detection, first using food**, then quickly moving on to a specific odour. We usually use dried cloves, but it can be a suitable odour of your choice if this is not practical for your dog. For example, some household 'Spider deterrent' sprays, contain Cloves - or - this may be a scent that your dog does not enjoy searching for. We can advise on alternatives.
Our classes are based upon methods your instructor has learned via ScentworkUK, Talking Dogs Scentwork and Dognostics 'Fun Nosework' courses as well as other research. Our aim is to make the classes fun and relaxed and unless you wish to work towards any formal certificated Levels, we have no pressure for owners to enter tests or trails, though we are happy to help should they wish to. Our 'Beginner' classes are aimed at ScentworkUK Level 1, with more advanced classes working to higher levels. Whilst for the adult dogs we aim to use 'Passive' indications (I.E. the dog does not interact with the scented article, but uses a behaviour to 'show' where the article is), however we do not want to preclude anyone from enjoying this fun activity with their dog, therefore we are happy for your dog to use 'Active' indications if you prefer (I.E. the dog eats the food found, or plays with a scented toy).
